Helmos-Vouraikos of UNESCO World Geopark
Description
The Protected Area Helmos-Vouraikos from October 2009 is a member of the European Geoparks Network (EGN) and the Global Geoparks Network (GGN) under the support of UNESCO, on a proposal from Helmos-Vouraikos Management Agency. The geopark Chelmos Vouraikos aims to highlight the important Geotopes National Park ie geological sites of special scientific, aesthetic, educational value and archaeological, ecological, historical or cultural interest. The promotion of alternative tourism activities, environmental education, protection and enhancement of the environment in these Geotopes found the full support of the Municipality of Kalavryta, Ski Resort, and Cave of the Lakes and the Centre for Environmental Education Kleitoria – Akrata. After successful evaluations (2013 and 2015) the area of responsibility of Helmos-Vouraikos Management Body part officially in “Global Geoparks UNESCO ».
The Global Geopark Helmos-Vouraikos of UNESCO covers an area of 647 square kilometers. and extends to the prefectures of Achaia and Corinth in North. Peloponnese. It presents a unique geological history, and hosts unique landscapes, heritage spots and sound scientific, educational and tourist infrastructure as facilities of the ski resortThe Cave of the Lakes, the sources of Aroanios River Planitero Gorge Vouraikos River with unique cog sidirodrmo Diakofto – Kalavryta Tsivlou the lake, the lake Glory, facilities of the Environmental Centre Kleitoria – Akrata in Klitoria, the Telescope Aristarchos etc.
