Description

It may be the first and oldest church in the city as the original church was built long before 1700 and is also mentioned in the Venetian Land Registry of Vostitsa. In the place of the temple in antiquity was Heraion. During the Venetian occupation it was the Metropolitan Church of the city of Aegio and was called “Panagia ton Xenon”, while for a while during the Turkish occupation it was celebrated as the Patron Saint of Aegio. The traveler Francis Pouqueville mentions the existence of the church in his book “Journey to Greece” (Voayage dans Grece) written in 1815. The old church was destroyed like the one in Faneromeni by the earthquake of 1861. From the big earthquake that took place in Aigio, the bell tower that was newly built fell and destroyed one side of the Temple, as a result of which the congregation watched the divine services and ceremonies on a wooden pedestal for a long time until they were gathered on the initiative of the commissioners and the people. money and rebuilt. The newer church was based on designs by Ernest Ziller (like most of the older temples of Aegio). Today the church is not open to the public as restoration work is being carried out after the damage suffered by the earthquake of 1995. Even so, it remains one of the most impressive temples in terms of architecture not only of the city, but of the entire Peloponnese.
