Description

One of the most important monuments of the city, although not mentioned by Pausanias in the 2nd century AD, is the ancient theater. Built on the northern slope of an artificial hill and partly carved into the natural rock, the theater overlooks the blue sea. It has a horseshoe-shaped cavity and is located at an altitude of 350m from the sea surface, north of the citadel. Its construction dates back to the first half of the 3rd c. BC, around 280-250 BC, when the Second Commune of the Achaeans – the Achaean Confederation – is founded and the Achaean cities are reorganized. The hollow was carved into the rock and, where it did not exist, the ground was properly formed and stone seats were placed. For the most part, the orchestra was carved into the natural rock, on the edges of which a groove was made for the drainage of rainwater. The stage building of the Hellenistic period was two-storey. A molding divides the concave into two parts and its total capacity amounts to 3,000 spectators, while its length reaches 30.70m.
