Difesa Grande Wood

The “Difesa Grande” wood stretches 6 km south from the town of Gravina in Puglia.
The wood is a beautiful natural oasis of about 2,000 hectares and is one of the most important woodlands of Apulia: it has earned the denomination of SCI area (Site of Community Importance).

To reach it and enjoy a very good moment surrounded by nature, simply leave Gravina in Puglia going south, take the provincial road 53 towards Matera for about 2 km and follow the directions for Bosco Difesa Grande, which you will find on your right. After about 1 km from the crossroads, the wood will appear in all its beauty. Keep going in the same direction and, after a few kilometres, you will find on your left the path leading to the refuge and, further on, the so-called “Terra rossa”, a parking and picnic area and the starting point of the cycle path. Always along the same road, there are some interesting itineraries that you can follow on foot or by bike.
