Description
Grottaglie is the “city of ceramics” and consequently, every year, organizes an exhibition/competition on its artistic spearhead, the ceramic.
The Ceramics Exhibition, whose first edition is dated 1971, is a tribute to the ceramic craftsmanship, which is an essential element of the identity history of the city which for centuries has transformed the soil into works of art. For the past two years the exhibition has expanded into the world and has become a real springboard for national and international artists on the contemporary art scene.
Usually organized inside the Episcopio Castle, the exhibition is characterized by the contextual presence of a real Competition, now in its 26th edition, on themes that are renewed annually.
The competition includes the friendly confrontation among more than 40 works created by the expert hands of local and international artists. Their artistic products, skilfully shaped in ceramics, are submitted to the judgement of a jury of national and international experts. The winning work, among other prizes obtained, is added to the contemporary section of the Ceramic Museum, as a new element in the soul of the city of Ceramics.

Grottaglie
Antonio A. writes: “The Grottaglie Ceramics Museum traces the stylistic and functional history of the handicrafts of this town in Apulia, famous for its ceramics. The Episcopio Castle is located right at the end of the main street in the ceramics district and rounds off a full immersion in quality craftsmanship. In summer, the museum also hosts a ceramics exhibition featuring works by international artists participating in the annual specialised competition organised at the Castle.”
