Fantiano Caves

Near the Gravina di Riggio, there is the park of the Fantiano Caves in Grottaglie. The park represents the best example of the renaturalization of a tuff quarry.

In the past the quarry was sadly used as a landfill until nature began to take possession of the place again. Today the quarry is a beautiful place characterized by a lush ecosystem: there is a lush Mediterranean scrub rich in myrtle, mastic, pine and Aleppo trees.

Even the animals have found this place extremely welcoming. In the quarry you can see owls, owls, barn owls, goldfinches and woodcocks.

In 1999 the quarry was recognized as a Regional Natural Park of the Land of Gravine. Inside, moreover, a natural stage has been created, called “Civic Space” which hosts numerous events and cultural activities.
