Description

The funicular railway is work of Charilaos Trikoupis. Before about 113 years, the rack railway Diakopto-Kalavryta, starting from the coastal town of Diakopto and alongside the footprints of the river, built bridges, tunnels bored, threw “teeth” and climbed to Kalavryta. The contract of the construction of the line was signed in 1889 and construction was finished seven years later. The line was designed by French technicians. The work was very difficult because of the rough terrain. On March 10, 1896 the train made its inaugural journey. Since then and until today, the VOURAIKOS river and the funicular march together. The train was integrated so well into the natural environment, which looks like it was always there. The methods of construction did not affect the ecosystem of the gorge. With wood and stone, technicians so perfect train projects think that the way nature itself. The route begins from Diakopto crosses the gorge of Zachlorou Vouraikos passes the village and ends in Kalavryta. The journey takes about 1 hour.
Cog is not just the “train”. Vouraikos gorge and the rack railway Diakopto-Kalavryta is a unique attraction in Greece.

“Walk in nature by train
Very beautiful route in nature. The train is relatively modern and very clean. I highly recommend it as long as it has good weather so you can enjoy the route. Tickets must be booked in advance as the number of seats is limited. The staff are very friendly and willing to serve even over the phone. “
